Harish Kalyan and MS Bhaskar deliver a tautly structured drama about a common problem that is excellent.

In “Parking,” a seemingly straightforward problem develops into a nuanced interpersonal drama.

Synopsis:

Eshwar (Harish Kalyan) and Aadhika (Indhuja), a young couple just married, move into a new home as tenants and gradually become friends with other residents. The expectant mother Aadhika is expecting a child soon, and her husband Eshwar works in IT. After that, Eshwar purchases a car so he can conveniently accompany his wife on trips. The couple’s life proceeded well until they encountered Illamparuthi (M. S. Bhaskar), who appears to have little sympathy for the expectant mother given how frequently he spars with Eshwar about parking spots.

Ilamparuthi’s ego does not want anyone to take over his designated parking area, which he has been using for the past ten years. Therefore, he does not want to give it up. The elderly guy known as Ilamparuthi is thought to be out of touch with modernism. He will actually be leaving his position as a government officer in a year. Even though Eshwar is significantly younger than Ilamparuthi, he does not back down either, giving the latter a run for his money.

The Setup:

Tenants of a new home are a young IT professional named Eshwar and his expectant wife Aadhika. They settle in and become enthusiastic about their growing family and future. Ilamparuthi, their downstairs neighbor, disturbs their early peace, nevertheless.
An imperturbable retiree named Ilamparuthi vigourously watches over the one parking spot in front of the residence. Eshwar starts a parking rights dispute the moment he purchases a car. Their opposing personalities and worldviews exacerbate their early passive-aggressive techniques into full-fledged verbal spats.

The Conflict:

Motivated by contemporary pragmatism, Eshwar considers parking and a car to be essential. Ilamparuthi, who holds firmly to traditional values, views the area as his own and is offended by the invasion. Their divergent moral philosophies lead to regular conflicts that transform neighbors into sworn adversaries.
Caught in the crossfire, Aadhika attempts to be the voice of reason but finds it difficult to compromise. Tensions escalate, and as a result, their relationships with other tenants and eventually with themselves suffer.

The Turning Point:

When a misunderstanding causes Eshwar to damage Ilamparuthi’s scooter, the conflict takes a nasty turn. Eshwar is consumed by fear and guilt, and Ilamparuthi’s rage is growing. But there is also a ray of light in this scenario when Ilamparuthi’s daughter steps in and encourages communication and comprehension.

The Resolution:

Eshwar and Ilamparuthi face their own shortcomings and prejudices via reflection and being compelled to work together by an unforeseen crisis. They start to see one other more than just the parking problem and understand the underlying fears and insecurities that are causing their actions.
The movie does not present a trite “happily ever after.” Rather, it shows a slow thawing of their relationship, characterized by tentative goodwill gestures, uncomfortable apologies, and a reluctant acceptance of one another’s differences.

The Message:

“Parking” delves beyond the particular dispute to examine more general themes of understanding, empathy, and communication. It draws attention to how seemingly unimportant problems can turn into arenas for more significant societal and generational conflicts. In the end, the movie challenges audiences to find common ground despite differences that at first appear insurmountable.

  •  The film excels in presenting the characters’ motivations and personalities in a subtle manner. Because Eshwar and Ilamparuthi are flawed people, we can relate to them and feel empathy for them.

  • The movie is not without its detractors; some think the resolution is unclear and the pacing is poor. Nonetheless, many viewers find resonance in its realistic depiction of human struggle and its message of understanding.
