PLOT

John Wick is in New York City, hiding under the Bowery King’s roof in order to take revenge on the High Table. Upon arriving in Morocco, he assassinates the Elder, the “one who sits above the Table”. Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont, a member of the High Table, responds by calling the manager of the New York Continental hotel, Winston, and his concierge, Charon. He tells them that the High Table has given him all the tools he needs to kill John, and he chastises Winston for not doing so in the past. As a penalty,  the Marquis strips Winston of his managerial duties, declares him “excommunicado”, destroys the New York Continental and executes Charon. The Marquis then enlists Caine – a blind, retired High Table assassin – to kill his old friend John, threatening to murder Caine’s daughter.

John seeks shelter at his friend Shimazu Koji’s Osaka Continental. Chidi, the second in command of the Marquis, comes at the hotel to look into it with the help of Caine and assassins from the High Table. Just before the High Table “deconsecrates,” Akira, the hotel’s concierge and daughter of Koji, leaves the premises, setting off a brawl. After fending off waves of armored assassins, John and Caine engage in combat. Mr. Nobody, a bounty hunter, breaks up their battle and lets John go once he figures out the current bounty for killing John isn’t high enough. John is being attacked by a wounded Koji, who keeps attacking Caine on his behalf. Eventually, Caine kills Koji, but he saves Akira.

John goes back to New York and meets at Charon’s graveyard with a furious Winston. Winston proposes that John challenge the Marquis to a duel by invoking an ancient High Table custom. If John prevails, he will have fulfilled his duty to the High Table; nevertheless, he can only call for a duel on behalf of a criminal family. John goes to the Ruska Roma crime syndicate’s Berlin headquarters to apply for reinstatement, having cut his links with them. Katia, his adoptive sister, demands that John assassinate Killa Harkan, a member of the High Table who killed her father, in order for him to be allowed to return. Killa arranges an attack at his club, but Mr. Nobody and Caine help,

John succeeds in killing him and regaining his position. Acting as John’s “second,” Winston presents the Marquis with John’s challenge, asking that, in the event that John prevails, his excommunicado be lifted and the New York Continental be completely financed by the High Table; in the event that John loses, on the other hand, Winston would likewise perish as the challenger’s “second.”

John and the Marquis meet in Paris under the direction of the Table’s agent, the Harbinger, to deliberate on the terms of the duel, which include firing pistols at daybreak the next day at Sacré-Coeur. The Harbinger threatens to have John and Winston put to death if they don’t show there on time, and the Marquis chooses a reticent Caine to succeed him. John receives a new ballistic armor and a weapon (9mm Pit Viper) when The Bowery King arrives in Paris. The Marquis has set a $26 million bounty on John in an attempt to keep him from making it to the combat in time. On his way to Sacré-Coeur, John fends off legions of assassins, including Mr. Nobody, who arranges for a bounty raise of $40 million. When John stops Chidi from murdering Mr. Nobody’s dog during their encounter, Mr. Nobody gives up trying to find John.

Just in time for the duel, Caine and Mr. Nobody arrive at the summit after helping John repel many assassins in the Rue Foyatier, including Chidi, whom Mr. Nobody kills. After two rounds of sparring in which John and Caine both sustain injuries, the third round is called off after Caine injures John too severely. Seizing the opportunity to execute the coup de grâce, the Marquis eagerly takes Caine’s position. John has not yet shot his third round, as Winston reveals while berating the Marquis for his haughtiness. Subsequently, John ends the duel instantly by taking the Marquis out with a headshot.

Caine and John are set free from the High Table by the Harbinger, and Winston is allowed to return to his position as Hotel Manager of the New York Continental. The money raised by the High Table will be used to rebuild the hotel. John considers his life and his marriage before passing away from his wounds. A while later, back in New York, Bowery King and Winston said goodbye to John at his tomb, which was close to his wife Helen’s.[A]
